The Knick-Knacker Barrel - An Adventure Site for your Fantasy Game of Choice

I didn't make this image, I just googled something close enough.

Howdy, Farmhands!

Back in 2023, I was given the chance to write for a project that was a bit of an experiment- A kickstarter for a TTRPG book that would be written by individuals who supported it at a specific tier, with a form of profit sharing for sales made after the complete book was out in the world. The premise of this pitch intrigued me enough to want to get in on the ground floor, though I eventually chose to bow out. There was nothing personal in my decision, and the book did release and fulfill it's KS obligations, though I've no information on how the monetization worked out for the contributors.

Before I chose to leave, I had prepared a draft of my contribution, with open spaces for links to other entries so as to make the individual locations feel more interconnected. Having done said work, I knew I wanted to eventually release it myself, but didn't feel right doing so until the original project was out in the world. This is said work. I've made some minor edits, but the original draft is mostly untouched and in the format requested of the previous project's organizers. I hope you find some use out of this unfinished adventure site!

    Until Next Time,

        Farmer Gadda

The Knick-Knacker Barrel

An Adventure Site for Your Fantasy Game of Choice

Despite the name, the ‘Barrel’ is a short and stout building made primarily of stone. A large Wooden barrel with the establishment’s name inscribed on it sits atop the roof instead. The ranch-style porch that wraps around the majority of the structure is filled with tables and chairs for passersby to relax on and is usually populated by at least 1 game of cards at any given time.

The primary room features large windows that let natural light illuminate the labyrinthine collection of doo-dads and what-nottery that is sold here. Most of the goods are decorative in design, featuring hand painted images of farm animals, or cute quips involving crop-based puns. Despite the hoard taking up most of the available floor space, there’s an air of comfort and welcome. A signboard has been attached to the main store counter, placed below an average eye level, listing ‘Jobs’ for seemingly innocuous items, such as “Cool Rocks”, “Crunchy Leaves”, and so on.

Knick-Knacks for Sale: (Complimentary Cool Rock with Purchase!)

- Farmer Gadda. Owner, Proprietor, and Ex-Farmer.

A tall and lanky human with a large poof of hair tied back behind his cap, Gadda is never seen without his signature pair of overalls, thick gloves, or Henbert, the stuffed yellow Chicken plush he carries in a satchel on his hip.

Gadda keeps his demeanor bright and cheery, happily offering knicky-knacks or snicky-snacks to anybody willing to laze about his establishment. He especially loves the town’s gaggle of children and keeps a selection of toys for them to receive as ‘payment’ for their ‘work.’

- Ewan the Sheep. A soot-black horned sheep that smells vaguely of brimstone.

Ewan lazes about the Barrel and doesn’t really do much. He’ll bleat and whistle at appropriate times that feel like sarcastic additions to your conversations, especially at the Farmer’s expense. Surely, he doesn’t understand what you’re saying… right?

Adventure Hook: Bug’s Back on the Menu.

Henbert has a hankerin’ for Bugs, or so Gadda says. Despite never uttering a word to anyone but the Farmer, he has a list of insects he wants to snack on.

  1. A Fuzzy, Buzzy Bumblebee
  2. A Grasshopper that’s hopped it’s last
  3. A Spider with 9 legs (but NOT a 10 legged spider that's missing one)
  4. The Slurpiest looking Caterpillar you can find
  5. Ants on a Log (Log optional)

Adventure Hook: Binds that Tie.

Ewan approaches the party while the Farmer is distracted and communicates by scratching images in the ground with his hoof. He insists on retrieving an object from [Name of Farm]’s burnt ruins. A Devil-made necklace inlaid with a blood ruby stone lies somewhere in the wreckage, and his true form cannot be revealed until the golden chain is broken.
